Themed Writing Workshops

OVERVIEW

Currently, these virtual workshops aim to examine the complexity of our identities as parents and individuals.

During each, we'll discuss a few pieces of published work that explore a specific theme. The workshops will also include writing prompts to help us explore a theme on a personal level, in-session writing opportunities, and group discussion.

All workshops are hosted by the Parents Who Write podcast.

THEMES

The theme for the next workshop (11/04/22) is parenthood. Potential future themes include partners, being adult children, loneliness, past vs. current self, home, love, etc.

HI, FRIENDS!

I'm Erin P.T. Canning

I'm a wife, mom, and writer, who not so long ago had felt like my entire identity, aside from being a mom, had completely vanished. My anxiety and depression only increased.

Then I started therapy and mindfulness techniques, both of which showed me the significance of carving time out of my day when I can get quiet, offload the mental chatter, and to return to being just myself.

And that’s exactly why I started writing again. Sometimes it was journaling. Sometimes it was creative writing.

Even though I initially hated my writing skills, they felt stilted and shallow, writing helped me to find my way back to myself.

Writing helps keep me grounded. Reconnecting with myself has allowed me to better connect with those around me. Because I give myself space to be myself, I'm better able to be fully present with my family.

And I found my purpose—helping other parents like you rediscover and reconnect with yourself through writing, so that you too have a safe space where you can just be you again. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I hope I'll see you at my next writing workshop or on social media.

Check out what past participants say

“I'm always looking for ways to expand and advance my writing. I absolutely loved hearing everyone's different interpretations of the excerpts you chose. I always find it interesting to see how we can all read the same piece and all see something different.”

I really liked how Erin tied in the readings in the end to the writing prompt. I enjoyed that part very much. The last exercise allowed me to explore my fears in a very creative way! And she gave us permission to do that through the writing exercise. I was pleasantly surprised with the class and would really love to take it again.

I wanted to add motivation to my writing journey and my parenting journey and that's exactly what I got! I enjoyed it because it got my mind running and my juices flowing.
