Writing Techniques Workshops

OVERVIEW

These virtual workshops aim to help writers with various levels of experience to gain new writing skills that will strengthen their overall writing.

During each, we'll examine a few pieces of published work that exemplify a specific technique. The workshops will also include writing exercises that will help you implement the technique yourself—both during the workshop and thereafter.

All workshops are hosted by the Parents Who Write podcast.

The focus of the next workshop (05/31/23) is character development. Potential future techniques include plotting methods, establishing setting and mood, creating unique points of view, showing vs telling, revision strategies, etc.

HI, FRIENDS!

I'm Erin P.T. Canning

I'm a wife, mom, and writer, who not so long ago had felt like my entire identity, aside from being a mom, had completely vanished. My anxiety and depression only increased.

Then I started therapy and mindfulness techniques, both of which showed me the significance of carving time out of my day when I can get quiet, offload the mental chatter, and to return to being just myself.

And that’s exactly why I started writing again. Sometimes it was journaling. Sometimes it was creative writing.

Even though I initially hated my writing skills, they felt stilted and shallow, writing helped me to find my way back to myself.

Writing helps keep me grounded. Reconnecting with myself has allowed me to better connect with those around me. Because I give myself space to be myself, I'm better able to be fully present with my family.

And I found my purpose—helping other parents like you rediscover and reconnect with yourself through writing, so that you too have a safe space where you can just be you again. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I hope I'll see you at my next writing workshop or on social media.
